The community is mourning the tragic death of 19-year-old TJ McDonnell, a TJHSST student who was killed in a hit-and-run collision while cycling in Nugentstown, Kells, Ireland.
TJ was cycling with a friend shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, when he was struck by a van. The driver reportedly failed to remain at the scene following the collision.
Tributes have since been paid to TJ, who was described as a much-loved and driven young man. He was cycling and training for an Ironman at the time of the crash, pursuing a goal he was passionate about.
Those who knew TJ remembered his energy, kindness and infectious smile. He was described as a beloved son, brother, nephew, teammate and friend who brought light and positivity to the lives of those around him.
TJ was also a member of Bohermeen Celtic, where he played football from a young age before becoming involved in coaching younger players. The club described him as a huge part of its family and expressed deep sorrow following his tragic passing.
A balloon release was planned in his memory on Thursday, August 27, giving friends, teammates and members of the community an opportunity to come together and honor his life.
His death notice described TJ as forever loved and missed by his heartbroken parents, siblings, extended family, friends and colleagues. He was also remembered by colleagues at Causey Farm and the Murtagh family.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support TJ’s grieving family following the devastating loss.
As tributes continue, those who knew TJ are remembering a young man whose life was heartbreakingly cut short while doing something he loved.
