Traffic on Interstate 80 in Nebraska was disrupted Sunday as motorists encountered reports of a crash affecting westbound travel in the central part of the state. Early information indicates that a crash was reported on I-80 near the Kearney–Lexington corridor, with at least one lane affected and drivers advised to reduce speed and use caution while passing through the area.
Interstate 80 is one of Nebraska’s busiest transportation routes, carrying substantial passenger and commercial traffic across the state. Even a relatively minor collision can quickly create congestion, particularly when vehicles are travelling at highway speeds and emergency or recovery crews need to work near active lanes.
According to current traffic reports, a westbound crash was reported around mile markers 256 to 253, in the area between Elm Creek and Lexington. Another traffic alert indicated that a westbound crash near mile marker 258 had blocked the right lane, with motorists being urged to keep left and reduce their speed.

The disruption comes after several serious I-80 crashes in Nebraska in recent weeks. On August 20, a woman from Hastings was killed after an SUV and semi-truck collided on I-80 in Hall County. Investigators said heavy fog may have been a factor in that crash.
Earlier in August, another fatal crash occurred near Sutherland in western Nebraska. According to the Nebraska State Patrol, a Nissan Frontier parked on the eastbound shoulder was struck by a semi that crossed onto the shoulder. One passenger in the pickup died at a hospital, while another passenger, a juvenile, suffered serious injuries. Interstate 80 was closed in both directions during the investigation because vehicles involved came to rest in the westbound roadway.
I-80 has also experienced significant traffic interruptions around Omaha. On August 20, a semi-truck struck a dividing wall near the 84th Street exit, breaking a utility pole and sending sand and debris toward the westbound side. The incident temporarily blocked two lanes and caused backups in both directions before the roadway was cleared.
