Family, friends and members of the community are mourning the heartbreaking death of Luke Gabriel Durling, a 14-year-old from New Brunswick who was remembered for his hardworking nature, Christian faith, love of family and passion for the outdoors.
Luke was born on October 7, 2011, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and died on August 20, 2026, following an accident. His unexpected passing has left his family, friends and church community grieving the loss of a young life filled with energy, kindness and promise.
He was the beloved son of Jason and Jolene (DeMerchant) Durling and a cherished brother, grandson, nephew and friend. He is survived by his brothers, Logan Lagacy, Kaleb, Ethan and Samuel Durling, along with his paternal grandmother Eloise Durling, maternal grandparents Keith and Patricia DeMerchant, aunt Teresa Vantassel, uncle Troy DeMerchant and other relatives and friends. His paternal grandfather, Terry Durling, preceded him in death.
Those who knew Luke described him as dependable and eager to help. He frequently worked alongside his father and was affectionately regarded as his dad’s “right-hand man.” Through those experiences, he developed practical skills while sharing valuable time with his family.
Luke loved anything with a motor, particularly four-wheelers, dirt bikes and wheeling. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and kayaking, often sharing outdoor adventures with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed teaching his younger brothers what he knew.
Homeschooled by his mother, Luke was remembered as a strong reader who enjoyed learning. His Christian faith was another important part of his life. He participated in River Valley Baptist Church, including serving with the church’s sound crew.
Visitation is scheduled for August 24, followed by a celebration of life on August 25 at Carleton Funeral Home, with burial at Lower Jacksonville Cemetery.
Our deepest condolences go to Luke’s parents, brothers, grandparents, extended family, friends and church community. May they find comfort in the memories of his kindness, faith, laughter and adventurous spirit. Though his life lasted only 14 years, the love he shared will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
