The Tyler Mountain Volunteer Fire Department (TMVFD) is mourning the loss of a pillar of our community and a true hero among our ranks. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lifetime Member Kelly Tillis, a man whose life was defined by selfless service, unwavering dedication, and a profound commitment to the safety of his neighbors.
Kelly’s journey with the Tyler Mountain Volunteer Fire Department began in the 1980s. Over the ensuing decades, he became a fixture of our department, transitioning from a dedicated volunteer to a legendary figure within our halls. His commitment to emergency services extended beyond our doors, as he was also a longtime, devoted member of the Cross Lanes Volunteer Ambulance Service.
Throughout his distinguished tenure, Kelly served in nearly every capacity imaginable. Whether he was responding to a structure fire as a firefighter or providing critical care as an EMS First Responder, Kelly was a man who answered the call without hesitation. He was there in the darkest hours, providing a calm presence and a helping hand to those in their moments of greatest need.
In recent years, Kelly’s passion for the department took on a new form. He devoted countless hours to the Red Light Express, our department’s vital fundraising group. His tireless work ethic and ability to rally others played an instrumental role in the continued success and operational strength of the TMVFD.
Kelly was more than just a member; he was a builder. He helped lay the foundation of the department we are proud to serve today. His legacy is woven into the very fabric of this organization, and his friendship will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of working alongside him.
While we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate a life exceptionally well-lived. We are profoundly grateful for the decades of sacrifice Kelly gave to this community. Kelly Tillis will never be forgotten; his spirit will live on through the department he helped build and the countless lives he touched along the way.
