VINELAND, N.J. — A 68-year-old Pennsylvania man was killed Saturday morning after a Tesla crossed the median on Route 55 and collided with his vehicle in Cumberland County, according to New Jersey State Police.
The victim was identified as Phillip Eastman, 68, of Springfield, Pennsylvania.
Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 8:31 a.m. on Aug. 22 on Route 55 near milepost 34.6 in Vineland.
According to New Jersey State Police Detective Sgt. Caitlin Brennan, a Tesla was traveling southbound when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Investigators said the Tesla veered off the left side of the roadway, crossed the grassy median, struck a tree, and entered the northbound lanes of traffic.
The Tesla then collided with a northbound Chevrolet SUV driven by Eastman.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found Eastman suffering from critical injuries. Despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Authorities said the driver of the Tesla and a passenger traveling in Eastman’s Chevrolet SUV both suffered moderate injuries. They were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly updated.
The collision temporarily disrupted traffic as emergency personnel worked at the scene and investigators began examining the circumstances that led to the crash. State police have not released the identities of the injured individuals.
