Family, friends, and loved ones are mourning the loss of Grayson Ammons, 29, of Okatie, South Carolina, after his death was confirmed following the discovery of his body behind a Beaufort business on August 21.
Ammons’ passing has left those who knew him grieving as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. While the details remain under review, his family and community members are left remembering his life and the impact he had on those around him.
Discovery Behind Beaufort Business
The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office confirmed Ammons’ identity after his body was discovered behind Randel’s Lawnmower Equipment Sales and Service, located at 1499 Salem Road, about one mile south of Boundary Street.
According to the Beaufort Police Department, officers responded to the business around 8:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a medical emergency. Ammons was found behind the property.
Business owner Brian Randel said surveillance footage showed Ammons in the company’s parking area around 5 a.m. on August 20. According to the account provided, Ammons was seen moving around the property before lying down in a pit area where he appeared to fall asleep.
Randel said Ammons later moved toward the rear of the property after vehicles began arriving at the business and entered a fenced-in area. He was not seen again on surveillance footage, and employees reportedly did not observe him during the following hours.
His body was later discovered Thursday morning when a mechanic went behind the business to retrieve a lawnmower.
Investigation Into Death
Authorities have not released additional details regarding why Ammons was at the property or what occurred after he entered the fenced-in area.
An autopsy has been completed, but the cause and manner of death have not yet been determined and remain under investigation, according to Beaufort County Coroner Deborah Youmans.
The Beaufort Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ammons’ death as officials work to establish what happened.
